WHAT IS RUGBY?
There are many rules in rugby that you often only learn while playing, but anyone can catch the base game by watching the matches. Rugby is a team game originating in England where an oval-shaped ball is carried into the opponent's goal area. In the Finnish version of rugby union, there are 15 players from each team on the pitch. In a full-scale rugby match, two halves of 40 minutes are played, plus additional minutes at the discretion of the referee.
The rugby ball is carried towards the opponent's goal area, running by carrying, passing and kicking the ball. All players of the attacking team in front of the ball are offside, so the ball may only be passed backwards. The ball can be kicked forward to yourself or to your team's players, who must be behind the ball line when the kick leaves.
The match is won by the team with the most points. Points are awarded as follows: If a player manages to push the ball to the ground in the opponent's goal area, a try worth five points is created, and the team that scores the ball has the opportunity to attempt a conversion kick worth two more points between the opponent's goalposts. The player carrying the ball can also kick the ball between the goalposts in a game situation, such a drop-goal brings the team three points. A penalty kick in the event of a foul is also worth three points.
Rugby is a contact sport: a player with the ball can be tackled from the shoulder line down. The goal of a tackle is to take the player to the ground, in which case he must let go of the ball. The purpose of contact is not to hurt the opposing player, but to get the ball to your team.
Other typical features of rugby include spectacular line-outs, where teams compete for the ball, often by lifting one of their players high into the air, and scrums, where teams compete for possession of the ball by pushing against each other in formation.
