The Wizards of Oulu Rugby club's men's team participated in the Men's Domestic 7's Finnish Championship for the first time in 2024 and won the overall Championship! The team was comprised of players from Wizards and Oulu Rugby Club as well as loan players from Jyväskylä & Helsinki Rugby Clubs!

Wizards of Oulu Men’s 7’s Shine Despite Challenging Conditions
The Wizards of Oulu Men’s 7’s team showcased their determination and sportsmanship in their second tournament appearance in Valkeakoski after a remarkable debut in the Finnish 7’s Championship. Arriving at the pitch covered in deep snow, the teams were greeted with a challenging scenario. After discussions among the organizers, referees, and players, some teams, including the Wizards, decided to push forward with the matches despite the less-than-ideal conditions.

In their opening game against Espoo Ice Bears, the Wizards delivered a dominant performance, securing a convincing 35-7 victory. The second pool match against Tampere Rugby Club also doubled as the semi-final, following Kalev's decision to abandon the tournament after just one match. The game was fiercely contested, with both teams displaying determination and skill. However, it was the Wizards who emerged victorious with a narrow 12-7 win, showcasing their ability to thrive under pressure.
Heading into the final, the Wizards faced a formidable opponent in the Warriors. Despite a strong offensive effort and relentless pressure from the Wizards, the Warriors managed to hold off their attacks and capitalize on some crucial errors, ultimately securing a 19-0 victory. Although the Wizards had to settle for second place in the tournament, their performance highlights their status as leaders on the overall Finnish Domestic 7’s Championship log. The team remains determined and focused on their goal of continued success in the next tournament at home!

Wizards of Oulu Triumph in Debut in Finnish 7’s Championship
In a spectacular display of skill and determination, the Wizards of Oulu Men’s 7’s team soared to victory in their debut in the first Finnish 7’s Championship tournament of 2024 held in Järvenpää. Under the guidance of coach Daryn Hiltunen and the leadership of captain Tero Hyvönen, the Wizards showcased their prowess on the rugby field, clinching the championship title in thrilling fashion.
The journey to victory was not without its challenges, as the Wizards faced formidable opponents throughout the tournament. Their campaign kicked off with a gripping encounter against Kalev Rugby from Tallin, Estonia. In a closely contested match, the Wizards emerged victorious with a scoreline of 12 – 7. The Wizards continued to dominate, securing a decisive win against Old Town Shamrocks with a score of 17 – 5. Their stellar performance in the group stage propelled them to the top of Pool B, setting the stage for an intense semifinal clash against Tampere Rugby Club.
With unwavering focus and precision, the Wizards delivered a commanding performance in the semifinals, overpowering Tampere Rugby Club with a resounding 29 – 5 victory. Buoyed by their success, the team marched into the final to face familiar foes, Kalev Rugby, in a showdown that would determine the championship title.
In a fiercely contested final Wizards held their ground, emerging triumphant with a hard-fought 19 – 12 victory, clinching their maiden win in the first tournament in the Finnish 7’s Championship.
